How to Apply Mineral Foundation, Blush, Eyecolors, & Powder (Step-by-Step)
Mineral foundation can look smooth and natural when you use the right amount, brush, and application technique. Watch the complete tutorial below, then use the written instructions as a quick-reference guide.
Applying Mineral Foundation
To apply mineral foundation, you’ll need a kabuki, flat-top, or powder brush. See our Brushes/Accessories page for the different options. For lighter coverage, choose a powder brush because it does not pick up as much product as a kabuki or flat-top brush.
Once you’ve selected your brush, have your foundation lid or a small saucer or bowl nearby. Tap a small amount of foundation—approximately 1/16 teaspoon—into the lid, saucer, or bowl. Swirl your brush through the minerals to distribute them evenly through the bristles, then tap away any excess.
Apply the foundation in light layers. Many people find it easiest to begin near the center of the face and blend outward toward the ears, forehead, jawline, and chin. Continue building thin layers until you achieve your desired coverage.
To conceal blemishes or other imperfections, use a small concealer brush to dot a tiny amount of foundation directly onto the area, then lightly blend the edges.
Avoid applying too much powder at once. Heavy application can look cakey, appear less natural, and emphasize fine lines or skin texture. Because adorned with Grace foundation provides high coverage, a very small amount may be all you need to even out your skin tone. For lighter coverage, mix it with a little Celestial Silkening Powder.
Always moisturize before applying mineral foundation, whether your skin is oily, normal, combination, or dry. Allow your skincare to absorb before beginning your makeup application.
Mineral foundation may emphasize dryness when the skin is not properly moisturized. Jojoba oil can be a good option for oily, normal, or dry skin because it provides lightweight moisture. For additional oil control, apply Heavenly Rice Powder—or Divine Oil-Control Powder for very oily skin—to oil-prone areas before and after applying your foundation.
For a smoother application, you may also apply the minerals with a lightly dampened flocked sponge. Sprinkle a small amount of foundation into a clean saucer or bowl—never dampen the product inside its original jar or lid, because introducing water can compromise its shelf life. Dip the damp sponge into the minerals and gently smooth the foundation across your face using even strokes. Continue applying light layers until you are satisfied with the finish.
Applying Mineral Blush
adorned with Grace blushes are well-pigmented and you literally only need to use grains at a time! It is best to use a stipple/skunk brush, such as our Premium Mini Duo Fiber, since it is made to pick up a smaller amount of product. If all you have is a regular blush/powder brush, just make sure to apply with a very light hand and/or mix a little of your foundation or our Celestial Silkening Powder to dilute the color.
Applying Mineral Eyeshadow/Eyeliner
Mineral eyeshadows work well with a primer for optimal lasting power. The most effective and popular favorite is Urban Decay Primer Potion.
However, you can also use your favorite cream concealer if you don't want to spend the extra money. It is most important, however, to use an eyeshadow brush vs. the foam applicators for a smoother and more even application. As you apply to your eyes, make sure to lightly dab it on instead of using large blending strokes for more shimmery/glittery shades if you want to keep some of the shine. However, blend away if you'd prefer a more semi-matte look.
To use the loose mineral eyecolors as eyeliner, simply take a dampened fine eyeliner brush and apply like liquid eyeliner. You can also apply it dry for a smokier effect.
Applying Powder
Most of our face powders can be applied before mineral foundation to help prime the skin or after foundation to set and finish your makeup.
For the best application, use a powder puff to gently press a small amount of powder onto the areas you wish to prime, set, or touch up. Avoid overloading the puff. Allow the powder to sit for 2–5 minutes so it can absorb excess oil, then use a fluffy powder brush to gently whisk away any excess. This technique is especially helpful for oily areas.
The Taco & Sandwich Method for Oily & Skin
If excess oil causes your mineral foundation to fade or wear away during the day, try the the Sandwich Method. This technique places your mineral foundation between two light layers of setting powder: setting powder first, mineral foundation in the middle, and another light layer of setting powder on top.
The Taco Method is a way to put on your powder so that it is even and smooth.

Applying Stellar Perfecting Powder
Stellar Perfecting Powder is a hydrating mineral setting powder specially formulated for dry and mature skin. It sets makeup like a traditional setting powder while helping to maintain moisture, smooth the appearance of the skin, and provide a polished matte finish without emphasizing dryness or fine lines.
Infused with Aloe and Allantoin, it helps comfort the skin and reduce the appearance of dry patches, leaving your complexion looking fresh, balanced, and naturally refined. Apply it with a powder puff using the method described above, then gently whisk away any excess with a fluffy powder brush.
Applying Celestial Silkening Powder
Celestial Silkening Powder is different because it was formulated to add a soft, dewy finish rather than a matte finish. It can be mixed into your mineral foundation or face powder, or applied on top of your finished makeup.
To apply it over makeup, tap a small amount into the lid. Lightly swirl a fluffy powder or stippling brush in the powder, tap away the excess, and gently sweep it over the areas where you want a subtle, natural-looking glow.
